MAN Diesel & Turbo has been chosen by the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) to power its newest BAE Systems-designed River-class offshore patrol vessel (OPV).
Under the contract, the company will provide two MAN 16V28/33D STC engines for the vessel, which is locally called the OPV No 2.

The 90m-long OPV is being built at Mahidol Adulyadej naval dockyard in Sattahip.
It will be deployed for economic exclusion zone (EEZ) roles, including routine patrols and border controls, as well as engaging in fishery protection tasks and disaster relief, and protecting natural resources in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea.
The MAN 16V28/33D STC engines come in three different configurations, fitted with 12, 16 and 20 cylinders respectively, while generating power levels from 5,000kW to 10,000kW per unit.
It is characterised by a high power-to-weight ratio, coupled with high specific fuel oil consumption (SFOC).

By GlobalDataCompliant with IMO Tier II and EPA Tier 2 requirements, the engine is capable of continuous low-load operation with high torque for fast acceleration, while requiring low maintenance costs owing to long service intervals and on-board maintenance.
MAN Diesel & Turbo Naval & Governmental senior sales manager Olivier Condemine said: "Sequential turbocharging improves the already proven performance and fuel-efficiency of the 28/33D engine, especially at intermediate and low-load operations known as silent running which is very important for this kind of vessel."
RTN’s first OPV built by BAE Systems, HTMS Krabi, also features MAN Diesel & Turbo’s two 16V28/33D engines.
