Kongsberg has unveiled Aegir SSA, its latest family of subsea situational awareness sonars, at the ONS 2026 exhibition in Stavanger, Norway.
Developed for government and commercial operators, the Aegir system is intended to provide situational awareness in areas such as ports, critical infrastructure, coastal zones, and offshore assets.

The system leverages Kongsberg’s work in acoustic technology, offering compact designs for various platforms, including uncrewed surface vessels, buoys, permanent sites and large maritime assets.
According to the company, Aegir SSA provides real-time detection, classification, and tracking of underwater objects, which supports safer navigation and operational decision-making.
In addition, the new family of sonars incorporates an AI-powered virtual sonar operator designed to reduce the need for constant human involvement.
The company said this service can be customised for specific missions and allows operators to train the AI with their own methods and operational experience.
Addressing the unique risks found in busy ports and harbours, including shallow waters, heavy vessel traffic, and unauthorised activities, Aegir SSA aims to provide operators with actionable underwater intelligence.
Kongsberg subsea awareness vice president Helge Andre Sundt said: “The underwater domain has become a critical operational environment for both commercial and government operators. With Aegir SSA, we are bringing Kongsberg sonar expertise into a purpose-built product family designed to enhance security, safety and operational awareness in demanding maritime environments.”
During the ONS launch event, Kongsberg demonstrated the system’s capabilities through a live data feed from an operational installation on a Fugro Seawatch buoy in the Oslofjord.
The buoy is connected to the Oslofjord Testbed and delivers persistent monitoring and real-time subsea data to support the protection of critical infrastructure.
Prior to commercial release, Kongsberg collaborated with Fugro to deploy Aegir SSA in real-world conditions, showcasing its application in safeguarding maritime assets via fixed monitoring platforms.
The unveiling follows Kongsberg’s recent contract awards for critical maritime infrastructure protection.
One contract involves surveillance of Princess Elisabeth Island in the North Sea, covering technologies such as drone detection radar and vessel traffic systems, while another, secured with an undisclosed international customer, focuses on underwater surveillance capabilities.
