The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress regarding a potential foreign military sale (FMS) of different assault amphibious platform variants to Greece.
The proposed deal is valued at $268m and has already been approved by the US State Department.

The FMS will see the delivery of 63 Assault Amphibious Vehicles (AAVs) – Personnel Variant (AAVP-7A1) along with four Recovery Variant (AAVR-7A1) and nine Combat Variant (AAVC-7A1) platforms.
The Government of Greece has further requested to buy 63 50-calibre machine guns (heavy barrel), MK-19 grenade launchers, M36E T1 thermal sighting systems and support equipment, including tools, enhanced applique kits and special mission kits.
The package also comprises integrated logistic support management services, unclassified technical manuals and data, applicable software and apparel, calibration services, parts obsolescence remediation, and follow-on support, as well as return, repair and reshipment of unserviceable repairable equipment.
Additionally, the US will provide government and contractor engineering support such as contractor engineering technical services and related supply, logistics and programme support.

By GlobalDataDelivery of the AAVs is expected to enhance the capabilities of Greece’s military forces to counter existing and future adversaries to safeguard maritime infrastructure and interests on Nato’s southern flank.
The country also supports Nato missions and other counterterrorism and counter-piracy maritime operations.
In a statement, DSCA said: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the US by helping to improve the security of a Nato ally, which is an important partner for political stability and economic progress in Europe.”
The deal will not require the assignment of any prime contractor and US government personnel in Greece.
However, the DSCA said that the delivery of AAVs, equipment and support will need the deployment of one contractor representative to Greece in a full-time equivalent position.
