The Indian Navy is expected to purchase diesel-powered submarines worth over Rs25,000 crore to replace its aging fleet of Russian submarines, reports the national daily Indianexpress.

The formal buyout proposal has been discussed by the Defence Ministry during the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) meeting.

The new line of diesel-submarines will replace the existing fleet of Kilo and Foxtrot series submarines.

The navy has already ordered six French Scorpene Hunter submarines, the first of which is expected to be launched by 2012, at a cost of over Rs18,000 crore.
