The UK Royal Navy has begun the tracking trials of a new advanced radar target indication situational awareness and navigation (ARTISAN) radar production system designated Type 997.

The trials follow the testing of the antenna subsystem, which has been designed to process data between the antenna that would be installed on the ship’s mast and the radar system cabinets.

ARTISAN will improve the surveillance and tracking capabilities of the ships and provide air traffic management facilities for future aircraft carriers.

The radar, scheduled for installation on the Type 23 frigate HMS Iron Duke, will be tested in advance with the frigate’s combat system.
