Huntington Ingalls (HII) has been awarded a contract by the US Navy for continuation of long lead time material procurement for construction of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, John F. Kennedy (CVN 79).

Under the $56.5m modification contract, the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding division will be the prime contractor.

John F. Kennedy is the second ship belonging to the latest class of Gerald R. Ford class of US Navy’s nuclear aircraft carriers.

The full construction on carrier is planned to begin in late 2012, with delivery to the US Navy scheduled for 2020.
