General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products has been awarded a contract to continue production of mk82 directors and mk200 director controllers for US Navy Aegis combat system illuminators.

The $11.2m contract is a modification to a contract awarded in September 2010 and brings the total value of the contract to $29.5m, if all options are exercised.

The mk82 and mk200 director controllers are critical components of the Aegis missile fire-control system’s illuminator and will be installed on ships that are being built under the DDG 51 shipbuilding programme.

The Aegis Combat weapon system is the most advanced tactical radar defence and fire-control system ever fielded by the US Navy.

Work will be carried out at the company’s facility in Vermont, US, with deliveries to be completed by July 2013.
