The US Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded a $41m combat management system hardware contract to Leonardo DRS.

The company will supply the hardware for US Navy surface combatants, allied naval forces, and the US Coast Guard. Allied navies of Australia, South Korea, and Japan will benefit from the contract.

The contract includes hardware such as multi-screen consoles, displays, and peripheral equipment, supporting the Aegis combat system and ship self-defence system.

The Aegis combat system, created by Lockheed Martin, is the multi-mission surface combat system used by the US Navy and six allied nations. It integrates sensors and weapons for simultaneous air and missile defence.

The hardware will serve as the primary operator interface, allowing sailors to gather, process, and display battlespace information for rapid tactical decision-making, the technology vendor explained.

Leonardo DRS Naval Electronics business unit senior vice president and general manager Cari Ossenfort said: “We are proud to continue our strong partnership with the US Navy, the Coast Guard, and our closest allies on this critical programme.

“Leonardo DRS remains the leading provider of critical combat and network hardware supporting surface ships and submarines, ensuring our maritime forces are equipped with the most advanced and reliable systems available.”

Leonardo DRS highlighted that the system’s open architecture design ensures interoperability and scalability across current and future platforms.

The group added that its combat system hardware enhances situational awareness, interoperability, and command effectiveness in multi-domain operations globally.

In March 2025, Leonardo DRS shipped the first next-generation integrated voice communication systems (IVCS) for the US Navy’s Arleigh Burke DDG 51-class destroyers.

The IVCS is a computer-controlled telephone system integrating with a ship’s announcing system, shore telephone lines, radio communications, and battle sound-powered telephone circuits.

Leonardo DRS provides capabilities in advanced sensing, network computing, force protection, and electric power and propulsion.

Earlier in 2025, Leonardo DRS received a $45m investment from the US Navy Submarine Industrial Base to expand its naval propulsion manufacturing facility in Goose Creek, South Carolina.

The investment, through contracts with HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding, will support a 40,000ft² expansion of the facility, which spans 140,000ft², to produce components for US Navy nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers.
