Damen Naval has contracted Alewijnse to serve as its primary partner for electrical system integration for the Colombian Navy’s Plataforma Estrategica de Superficie (PES) frigate, which is currently under development.

Alewijnse was selected for this role due to its collaboration with Damen on various defence and security projects, including the combat support ship Den Helder.

The contract involves Alewijnse integrating all major electrical systems on the frigate, including power distribution, cable routing, power management, and onboard systems such as navigation lighting and entertainment.

Alewijnse is also set to oversee the integration of key subsystems in collaboration with Damen Naval and its technological allies. This includes managing the installation of the propulsion drive system, sourced from Van Meer, and the development of the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) with Praxis Automation.

Additionally, Alewijnse will facilitate the provision of the Integrated Bridge Management System (IBMS) in partnership with Anschütz.

Alewijnse CEO Gert Bravenboer said: “We are proud of our continued partnership with Damen Naval on this value-creating partnership for the Colombian Navy. This is a great example of a strategic alliance where the yard, suppliers, and technology partners collaborate closely.”

The PES frigate is based on Damen’s SIGMA 10514 design. It will be customised to meet Colombia’s operational needs and is expected to be delivered to the Colombian Navy in 2030.

In conjunction with Damen and Colombia’s national shipbuilding entity COTECMAR, Alewijnse plays a role in fostering local industry participation by pinpointing opportunities for Colombian suppliers.

This initiative aligns with Damen Naval’s strategic objective to reinforce regional security by cultivating partnerships, exchanging expertise, and promoting industrial collaboration.

Damen Naval project director Jasper Oreel said: “As one of our co-makers and main suppliers, Alewijnse will play a crucial role in determining the success of the PES project.

“Therefore, I am pleased to see Alewijnse also teaming up to support the local content efforts with the aim to involve the Colombian market.”

In May 2025, Damen Naval selected Portuguese defence technology company EID to provide an integrated communications control system (ICCS) for the PES frigate.
