Poland has entrusted MBDA with equipping the Miecznik-class frigates with the Sea Ceptor naval air defence system to boost its maritime security capabilities.

MBDA has clinched a contract to integrate its Sea Ceptor naval air defence system into Poland’s three new Miecznik-class frigates. This latest generation system is designed to shield naval vessels from threats, including supersonic anti-ship missiles and unmanned surface vessels, enhancing the security of Poland’s maritime interests.

The contract marks a continuation of agreements between MBDA and Poland, mainly focusing on MBDA’s CAMM family of air defence missiles. Poland will leverage CAMM’s interoperability and optimise its existing CAMM missile stockpiles to equip the Miecznik-class frigates. The installation of CAMM on the vessels, utilising a quad packing solution in the Mk41 VLS, ensures a high load-out and boosts platform survivability.

In 2023, UK missile developer MBDA signed a £4bn deal with Polish defence company PGZ, marking the largest-ever commercial agreement between the two nations. The contract involves support for the Narew air defence program for the Polish Armed Forces.

MBDA’s collaboration with PGZ aims to establish a sovereign missile capability in Poland through the NAREW programme, featuring knowledge and technology transfer. This partnership extends beyond Miecznik, encompassing other programmes like PILICA+ and a joint effort on a future medium-range CAMM missile.

The alliance enhances Poland’s defence capabilities and stimulates its industry, creating high-skilled jobs and driving operational efficiencies.

The global adoption of the CAMM family for naval and ground-based air defence is noteworthy, with several nations, including BrazilCanadaNew ZealandSweden, and the UK, entrusting their security to this technology.
