The US Navy has awarded a $16.7m contract to Raytheon for SeaRAM weapon systems and associated support equipment.

Under the contract, the company will provide two MK 15 Mod 31 Close-In Weapon System SeaRAM weapon systems, ancillary equipment and reliability spares including common support equipment and initial outfitting spares.

The SeaRAM is a phalanx Close-In Weapon System anti-ship missile defence system consisting of a small and lightweight Rolling Airframe Missile.

The autonomous weapon system is a component of the combat ship Littoral Combat Ship which can search, detect, track and fight threats in shallow coastal waters.

The major work will be carried out in Germany and the US and is expected to be complete by September 2011.

The navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded the contract.
