The sea trials, watched by officials from the Navy’s Bureau of Inspection and Survey, were conducted by the ship’s developer General Dynamics NASSCO.
All onboard systems, from the power thrusters at the bow to the steering system at the stern of the $500m ship, were tested by NASSCO.
The 827-compartment Schirra, the eighth of 14 T-AKE-class ships built by NASSCO for the Navy’s Military Sealift Command between 2003 and 2012, will be used to deliver cargo and ammunition to Navy warships at sea.
