The US Navy has awarded a $25.1m contract to Lockheed Martin to procure the required hardware for the sonar system upgrade aboard the navy’s Virginia Class ships.

The acoustic rapid commercial off-the-shelf insertion (A-RCI) is a sonar system upgrade that integrates and develops towed array, hull array, sphere array, and other ship sensor processing through rapid insertion of commercial off-the-shelf-based hardware and software.

Under the contract, the company will provide A-RCI hardware consisting of Virginia Class long-lead material and economic order material.

The system has already been installed on the first ten of the Virginia Class ships and the company is procuring new construction systems for the next four ships of the same class.

Work will be carried out in Virginia and Florida and is expected to be complete by December 2011.

The contract has been awarded by the Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington Navy Yard, DC.
