The US Navy has awarded a $79.4m contract to Marine Systems, a division of Northrop Grumman Corporation to provide engineering services and hardware for all Trident II D-5 missiles.

The Trident II D-5 is a three-stage, solid propellant, inertially guided fleet ballistic missile with a range of more than 4,000nm.

The Submarine-launched ballistic missile is currently in service with the US Navy deployed ballistic missiles submarines (SSBN) and cruise missile submarines (SSGN) underwater launcher systems.

Major work will be carried out in California and the rest in Washington and Georgia, which is expected to be complete by 30 June 2011.

The contract has been awarded by the navy’s Strategic Systems Programs, Arlington, Virginia.
