The US Navy has awarded a contract to Innovative Defense Technologies (IDT) to provide software support services for the automatic test and retest (ATRT) of software on naval weapons systems.

The developed testing solution is expected to reduce the overall testing costs by 25%, as the company estimates that software testing consumes 60% of the time and cost of developing new weapons systems.

Under the $49.1m contract, the company will provide software development and engineering services to reduce the overall testing costs for automated testing of combat systems aboard the entire submarine fleet.

The ATRT product provides a automated software testing capability that includes a testing framework, automation engine and reporting features.

In addition, ATRT can be introduced at any phase of a programme. It uses existing interfaces and documentation and gets applied to the testing programme as required.

Work will be carried out at the company’s facility in Virginia and is expected to be complete by October 2014.
