India has sucessfully test fired the supersonic BrahMos cruise missile from the integrated test range (ITR) at Chandipur, off the Orissa coast.

The launch met all the mission requirements according to the director of the test range, SP Dash.

The cruise missile did a steep dive with a flight speed nearly three times the speed of sound, a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) official said.

The missile could be used for surgical strikes without causing collateral damage and is capable of carrying warheads up to 300kg. It can engage ground targets from an altitude of 10m.

The BrahMos block-II, variant, an Indo-Russian joint venture, has been developed at specific small targets, with a low-radar cross section, in a multitarget environment.
