Taiwan has deployed the domestically developed new supersonic anti-ship missile, Hsiung Feng III, on its warships, National Defence Committee chairman Lin Yu-fang has said.

Lin quoted Vice-Admiral Lee Hao as saying, “several types of warships have been armed with Hsiung Feng IIIs [Brave Wind].”

According to Lin, the missiles will be deployed on eight Perry Class frigates and seven patrol boats under the $11.89bn-won ($413m) project.

The Hsiung Feng III missile is designed to cruise at a speed of Mach 2.0 and has a range of up to 130km.

Taiwan also has plans to build a new warship equipped with guided missiles next year.

The nation’s Soviet-era aircraft carrier, Varyag, is expected to make its maiden voyage before the end of this year, according to Agence France Presse.
