Fincantieri has delivered two fast attack craft, Nyayo and Umoja, to the Kenyan Navy after completing mid-life refitting at Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard.

The refits made were hull reconstruction, maintenance of the engines, reduction gears and shaft lines, electrical and automation plant, and complete replacement of all command and control equipment.

The upgrades also included repairs to the conditioning plant maintenance work on all auxiliary plant and installation of new equipment.

Each 56.7m-long ship has a displacement capacity of 450t, can cruise at a maximum speed of 40kt and accommodate a crew of 45.

Currently, the Kenyan Navy operates two ships to carry out coastal patrols and combat smuggling and piracy missions.

The refit contract was awarded in 2008.
