Rolls-Royce - Marine Propulsion Solutions

At Rolls-Royce we work closely with our customers to develop innovative, value-adding solutions that will fully meet their future requirements. We have been supplying products for surface ships and submarines for over 50 years, and our extensive product base and experience in both ship design and system integration enables us to bring the right products together when developing power, propulsion and motion control solutions.

This approach enables us to deliver a complete service, from initial concept studies, through equipment selection, systems integration and through-life support.

SHIP POWER SYSTEMS

The MT30 is an example of the new technologies Rolls-Royce is bringing to the naval sector. Rated at 36MW, it has been selected to power the Lockheed Martin littoral combat ship and the first two DDG 1000 Zumwalt class destroyers for the US Navy. It has also been down-selected for the Royal Navy's future carrier (CVF).

Other gas turbines on new programmes are the RR4500 (a 4MW generator set to provide auxiliary power for DDG 1000), and the WR-21, power plant for the Type 45 destroyers.

Bergen diesel engines are available for powers of 1.2MW to 8MW and can be supplied as packaged generators sets. Four 1.2MW Bergen gen sets have recently repowered the RFA support ship RFA Argus.

PROPELLERS AND THRUSTERS

Rolls-Royce is a world leader in propulsor technology. The Kamewa and Bird-Johnson controllable and fixed-pitch propeller designs have recently been updated with the Kamewa 'A' CP hub, providing improved hydrodynamic efficiency and a reduced weight.

A fixed-pitch unit, the Kamewa® Adjustable Bolted Propeller (ABP), which is fitted to the Type 45 destroyer, features blades that can be adjusted or replaced using hand tools. Other products include azimuth thrusters, podded propulsors, azipull pulling thrusters and lightweight submarine propulsors.

WATERJETS

Our Kamewa waterjet range is the broadest in the business with installations in over 20 different naval classes, plus a variety of fast patrol craft and RIBs. New levels of stealth have been achieved with the naval design that powers the Visby class corvettes and the monohull LCS.

Mixed and axial flow models are available in aluminium and stainless steel, and provide powers from 200kW to over 30MW.

COASTAL PROTECTION VESSELS

The Rolls-Royce approach to specialist vessel design offers navies and shipyards solutions that can be built virtually anywhere. Our coastal protection vessels are suitable for a wide range of duties: patrolling, fisheries protection, emergency standby, pollution control, fire-fighting, salvage and emergency towing.

NAVAL AUXILIARIES

Our naval auxiliaries include double-hull 25,000dwt and 14,000dwt designs capable of 20 knots to 27 knots based on a proven ropax hullform.

FAST LOGISTIC VESSELS

We have a family of fast logistic vessels comprised of monohull vessels with long range (3,000nm), high speed (40 knots) and a large payload (2,500t).

SUBMARINE SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT

Rolls-Royce has a broad range of submarine systems skills that flow from over 50 years as the technical authority for all Royal Navy nuclear submarine plants, and has designed and supplied the long-life core that powers the new Astute class.

Other products include turbo-generators, flexible couplings and zebra batteries; the sodium / nickel chloride battery technology in the latter delivers new levels of performance and weight reduction, with zero emissions (gassing) in a maintenance-free package.

AFFORDABLE AVAILABILITY

At Rolls-Royce we pride ourselves in our ability to work in partnership with our customers where we listen, establish requirements and then offer support solutions to match. Options can range from a simple and cost-effective equipment maintenance package, through to a fixed-price system level availability contract with risk transfer and gain share.

A broad product range enables Rolls-Royce to provide power, propulsion, automation / power electronics and motion control systems for a wide range of naval vessels.

The Rolls-Royce MT30 delivers a market leading power-to-weight ratio and has been selected to power the US Navy's DDG 1000 destroyer.

The Rolls-Royce range of Kamewa mixed and axial flow waterjets is available for powers from 200kW to over 30MW; stainless units power the US Navy's LCS1 and Norway's Skold class (pictured).

Six nations use Rolls-Royce designed vessels for coastal protection duties, including the UK and France, as shown here.

Zebra battery technology is lightweight (40% of lead acid) with high power density; over a one-hour discharge a Zebra module delivers double the energy of an equivalent lead-acid cell.
