The US Navy has deployed its Independence-class littoral combat ship USS Montgomery (LCS 8) to Singapore as part of a rotational deployment to the Indo-Pacific area of operations.

The Austal-built LCS 8 arrived at Changi Naval Base on 6 July. The arrival marks the US Navy’s fourth deployment of LCS vessels to South East Asia.

Previous LCSs to have undertaken the rotational deployments include USS Freedom (LCS 1), USS Fort Worth (LCS 3) and USS Coronado (LCS 4).

Logistics Group Western Pacific commander rear admiral Joey Tynch said: “Rotational deployments by our littoral combat ships provide the presence and flexibility that are so important in this region.

“This platform is a utility player, ready to perform a full spectrum of tasking from maritime security operations and theatre security cooperation to humanitarian assistance and disaster response. That versatility strengthens our ability to integrate with our partner navies in the Indo-Pacific.”

During its deployment, USS Montgomery will carry out operations, exercises and port visits in the region.

In addition, the ship will be used to provide maritime security and stability in the region.

Destroyer Squadron 7 commander captain Matthew Jerbi said: “USS Montgomery’s unique capabilities and characteristics are well-suited for a broad range of missions.

“The manoeuvrability, shallow draft and tailored mission packages make Montgomery a tremendous resource to the US 7th Fleet, and a capable partner to regional navies.”

USS Montgomery made its first port visit in the Philippines last month. It is the fourth naval vessel to have the name Montgomery.

LCS ships are fast surface combatants that can be deployed in support of both near-shore and open-ocean operations.
