TKMS and UAE defence group EDGE have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore the joint development of underwater surveillance and protection capabilities.
The non-binding agreement was signed in Munich during the UAE state visit to Germany and forms part of a wider German-UAE initiative on closer defence and security co-operation.

Under the MoU, the companies will assess options for an integrated approach combining multiple platforms and sensor systems for maritime surveillance and protection.
Such an arrangement could support the creation of a broader operational picture of activity in the maritime domain, TKMS said.
The scope of the work includes examining how TKMS platform capabilities could be combined with EDGE’s systems expertise.
A timetable, programme value, procurement plans or specific systems covered by the agreement have not been disclosed.
TKMS chief executive Oliver Burkhard said: “We welcome the initiative of the German government and the UAE to strengthen cooperation in the defence and security areas. TKMS’s long-standing partnership with the UAE represents a solid foundation for our joint commitment.
“This cooperation will strengthen underwater surveillance and defence capabilities in the long term—an important contribution given the current security situation. TKMS is committed to continuing its long-standing engagement in the UAE and contributing to the further development of the national security architecture.”
The agreement was reached as geopolitical tensions have increased demand for naval capabilities to safeguard maritime security and commercial shipping routes.
The companies will assess whether combining platforms and sensor systems from TKMS and EDGE could support maritime surveillance and protection activities.
TKMS supervisory board deputy chairman Miguel Ángel López Borrego signed the memorandum alongside Omar Al Zaabi, president of commercial at EDGE.
