The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has placed an order for the supply of Saab Lightweight Torpedoes (SLWT) along with torpedo tubes.

The deal, valued at approximately SEK 1.3bn, marks the second order from Sweden for the anti-submarine warfare solution, revealed defence contractor Saab. The company is set to commence initial deliveries in 2026.

The SLWT, referred to as Torped 47 by the Swedish Armed Forces, represents Sweden’s latest lightweight torpedo system designed to enhance the country’s maritime defence strength.

The Torped 47 light torpedo system can operate effectively in the unique conditions of the Baltic Sea, says Saab.

Equipped with a fully digital homing system, the SLWT supports both wire-guided and “fire-and-forget” missions. It can be launched from submarines, surface ships, aircraft and helicopters.

In 2020, Saab collaborated with the FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces to execute the first launch tests of the torpedo from both a corvette and a submarine. These tests took place at sea ranges situated off the coast of Karlskrona, along the eastern shoreline of Sweden in the Baltic Sea.

Saab delivered the first lightweight torpedo system to FMV in October 2022. It entered service with the Swedish Navy in 2023.

In March 2025, Torped 47 was test fired from a combat boat 90. The test outcomes indicated that the system operates effectively on platforms smaller than those it was traditionally designed for.

The SLWT is capable of functioning in both shallow and deep waters and can handle a range of water temperatures and salinities.

Saab business area Kockums head Mats Wicksell said: “We are proud to continue to support Sweden in its efforts to modernise underwater weapon systems in order to protect the Baltic Sea region.

“This state-of-the-art system is providing the Swedish Armed Forces with increased capabilities, including torpedoes, spare parts, training systems, and technical support.”

In 2023, the Finnish Navy carried out acceptance tests for the torpedo in the Archipelago Sea. The launches were conducted by the Hamina-class fast attack craft, PGG Pori and PGG Hamina. The torpedo system will also be deployed onto the Navy’s Pohjanmaa-class corvettes.
