The US Navy has awarded a contract to Northrop Grumman to complete planning work for the refuelling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of nuclear-powered USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.

Under the $80.1m contract, the company will provide planning work for the ship overhaul which includes design, documentation, engineering, material procurement, shipboard inspections, fabrication and preliminary shipyard or support facility work.

The Northrop Grumman-built USS Abraham Lincoln is the fifth Nimitz Class carrier to undergo a life-time overhaul.

Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding aircraft carrier overhaul and carrier fleet support vice-president Jim Hughes said Lincoln’s RCOH would be undertaken by a group of experienced shipbuilders that would partner with the navy to ensure the successful completion of the project from the planning stages to redelivery of the ship.

The contract has options, which, if exercised, would make the potential value of the contract $678.6m.
