The US Navy has awarded a contract to General Dynamics (GD) to produce 118 Type-3 advanced mission computers (AMC) for its F/A-18 aircraft.

The AMC is a ruggedised, high-performance mission and display-processing system that provides situational awareness and combat systems control to the flight crew.

The highly reliable system can operate in extreme environmental conditions and is capable of processing the high-speed data flows from the latest in sensor technology which includes general purpose, input / output, video, voice and graphics processing.

General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems president Lou Von Thaer said the open architecture approach allowed for technology refreshes and new generations to avoid obsolescence and provide improved performance for the navy.

Work will be carried out at the GD facility in Bloomington, Minnesota. It is expected to be complete by the end of 2011.
