The Indian Navy says it will increase its fleet of fast attack craft in an effort to thwart attacks like those in Mumbai in November 2008.

The Indian Navy has commissioned six new fast attack craft, which can cruise at a speed of 70km/h, to enhance the security levels along the coast, according to the Press Trust of India.

In addition, the navy is also planning to commission 50 to 60 small and intermediate fast attack craft for deployment at various ports along the eastern and western coastal areas of the country.

During the terrorist incident, attackers travelled by sea to stage coordinated attacks in Mumbai. The attacks began on 26 November 2008, killing at least 170 people and injuring over 300.
