Under the $160.4m contract, GE will replace the engines on the Navy’s H-60 helicopter and AH-1W attack helicopters.
The Navy uses the H-60 airframe under the model designations SH-60B, SH-60F, HH-60H, MH-60R, and MH-60S, which can be deployed aboard any air-capable frigate, destroyer, cruiser, fast combat support ship.
The H-60 Seahawk can perform missions including antisubmarine warfare, undersea warfare, anti-surface warfare, naval special warfare insertion, search and rescue, vertical replenishment and medical evacuation.
The AH-1W Super Cobra is an attack helicopter that provides en route escort for assault helicopters and their embarked forces.
The helicopters undergo missions including helo close air support, low altitude and high speed flight, target search and acquisition as well as fire support to the landing force.
Work will be carried out by GE at its facility in Arkansas and is scheduled to be complete by September 2014.
