The US Navy has awarded a contract to optical instruments and lens manufacturer DRS Sensors and Targeting Systems for research and development of photon-trap structures for quantum advanced detectors.

Under the $5.6m contract, the company will research and develop an infrared imaging system that operates over a bandwidth extending from 0.5 to 5.0 microns and a resolution of 1,024×1,024 pixels.

The focal plane array of the system must exhibit high detectivity and low noise equivalent temperature at 200K.

Work will be carried out in California, and is expected to be complete by January 2013.

The contract has been awarded by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport, Rhode Island.
