The US Navy has awarded a $571.1m contract to aircraft engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney for initial engine production for the Joint Strike Fighter.

Under the contract the company will manufacture seven propulsion systems for the conventional take-off and landing jets as well as one spare main engine and other parts.

The contract also includes manufacture of seven propulsion systems for the Marine Corps’ vertical landing variant and spare parts.
