L-3 Communications Platform Integration division has been awarded a contract to perform aircraft sustainment, modification and installation (SMIP) for the US Navy fleet of P-3, EP-3 and NP-3 aircraft.

The $104m indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (ID/IQ) contract follows a previous programme awarded to L-3 in 2005.

The SMIP programme intends to provide an intensive depot-level process, component inspection and deficiency identification for the P-3 airframe.

L-3’s SMIP activities include refurbishment and installation of the P-3 outer wing, special structural inspection kits (SSI-Ks), phased maintenance inspections (PMIs) and modification / installation programmes (MIPs).

The programme will ensure safe and reliable aircraft operation, as well as enhanced aircraft service life expectancy to sustain inventory levels throughout the service period.

Work will be performed on all 147 series of P-3 aircraft fleet with the US Navy.
