General Dynamics Bath Iron Works has been awarded a contract to provide additional systems engineering services related with the detail design and construction of the Zumwalt (DDG 1000) class destroyer.

The $6.7m contract is a modification to a previously awarded contract to support the construction of the US Navy destroyer.

Under the contract, GD will provide systems engineering efforts including detail design excursions, shock qualification, production process prototype manufacturing and life cycle support services prior to post shakedown availability.

The US Navy Zumwalt-class destroyer (DDG-1000) is being designed as a multi-mission ship capable of conducting surface warfare, anti-aircraft, and naval fire support missions.

Work will be carried out at the company’s facility in Maine, US, and is expected to be completed by September 2011.

The US Naval Sea Systems Command is the contracting activity.
