The US Navy Aegis guided missile destroyer, William P Lawrence (DDG 110), has successfully completed its super trial in the Gulf of Mexico.

During the trial, the ship’s weapons, communications and propulsion systems were tested and other inspections were conducted that included habitability, water purification and food preparation.

The Northrop-built vessel has a displacement capacity of 9,200t, is powered by four gas-turbine propulsion plants and can cruise at a speed of 30kt.

The multimission destroyer has been designed to conduct missions that range from peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power projection.

The 509ft-long ship will be capable of simultaneously fighting air, surface and subsurface battles, and is equipped with innumerable offensive and defensive weapons to support maritime defence needs.

The final DDG 51 Flight IIA ship will be delivered to the US Navy in the next six weeks.
