Fincantieri has delivered the KRI Brawijaya-320, a multipurpose combat ship (MPCS/PPA), to the Indonesian Navy at its shipyard in Muggiano, La Spezia, Italy.

The event was attended by Fincantieri chairman Biagio Mazzotta, Indonesian Navy chief admiral Muhammad Ali, and Indonesia Ambassador to Italy Dr Junimart Girsang.

The KRI Brawijaya-320 is the first of two MPCS/PPA vessels constructed for Indonesia, with its sister ship, the KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321, following closely behind.

The contract for these vessels, valued at approximately €1.18bn ($1.38bn), was signed in 2024, following interest generated by the MPCS/PPA vessels “Francesco Morosini” and “Raimondo Montecuccoli” during their campaigns in Indonesia in 2023 and 2024.

Originally constructed for the Italian Navy, the ships were been renamed KRI Brawijaya-320 and KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321.

The MPCS/PPA class is designed for a variety of missions, including combat operations, maritime patrol, rescue, and civil protection.

Built at Fincantieri’s Riva Trigoso-Muggiano shipyard, these vessels are claimed to be the largest combat ships in the Indonesian Navy.

The vessels are intended to enhance stability in the Indo-Pacific region and safeguard national interests.

Measuring 143 metres (m) in length and capable of exceeding speeds of 31 knots, the KRI Brawijaya-320 accommodates a crew of 171.

It features a combined diesel and gas turbine propulsion system (CODAG) along with an electric propulsion system.

The ship is also equipped to deploy high-speed boats, such as rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs), using a lateral crane or a stern hauling ramp.

In April 2025, Fincantieri begun construction of the Italian Navy’s first next-generation FREMM frigate, the “Evolution” version (FREMM EVO), marked by a steel-cutting ceremony at the Riva Trigoso shipyard.
