General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) has secured a definitised delivery order to supply the first set of repair and spare parts for the US Navy’s Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).
The spares will help provide sustainment support to the vessel’s electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS) and advanced arresting gear (AAG).
GA-EMS Programmes vice-president Rolf Ziesing said: “We’ve worked tirelessly with the navy to bring these complex and transformative systems to life, from the initial EMALS and AAG concepts through the first successful F/A-18F aircraft launch and arrestment on CVN 78 at sea.
“This delivery order, along with other GA-EMS delivery orders and contracts, provides the navy with a source for spares, depot repairs, and technical support necessary to keep EMALS and AAG performing efficiently and consistently.”
The deal will also see the company supply onboard repair parts to support the land-based AAG site at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey, US.
In addition, GA-EMS has received various other orders and contracts for the provision of equipment assessment and analysis, quality assurance, manufacturing and integration of parts at its manufacturing unit in Tupelo, Mississippi.
The company’s personnel are also set to deliver technical support on-board USS Gerald R. Ford during at-sea ship certification procedures.
GA-EMS is offering hands-on crew training at its ship-set control lab in San Diego as part of the deal, as well as at the land-based test sites at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.
Ziesing also said that the firm is building the foundation for EMALS and AAG system sustainment for the entire fleet of Ford-class vessels, including the future USS John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), which is currently under construction, and the future USS Enterprise (CVN 80).
