BMT has entered into a strategic partnership with BAE Systems Australia to submit a joint proposal for the upcoming tender issued by the Commonwealth for the sustainment of the Anzac Class Design Support Contract.

The collaboration, branded as “DSC–West,” aims to secure the contract for maintaining these vessels. It seeks to leverage the combined maritime sustainment expertise located within the Henderson maritime precinct in Western Australia.

This partnership aims to provide sovereign maritime solutions that are specifically tailored to meet the Commonwealth’s requirements.

BAE Systems Australia – Maritime acting managing director Paul Berryman said: “This teaming arrangement with BMT supports the continued growth of Australia’s sovereign defence capability in collaboration with local industry.

“BAE Systems has been involved with the Anzac class for over three decades, and we remain committed to working with the Commonwealth to ensure the fleet is capable, lethal, and ready.”

BMT and BAE Systems Australia are set to deliver comprehensive platform insight, continuous design authority access, and reliable sovereign capability.

The team is equipped to fulfil the requirements of Anzac-class vessel sustainment, offering both the essential “know-how” and “know-why” that are crucial for the ships’ performance and durability.

The partnership’s strength is bolstered by the inclusion of Australian Maritime Technologies (AMT), which has now become part of BMT’s larger global organisation.

AMT has a history of supporting the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) Anzac-class vessels from their initial design to ongoing in-service support.

BMT stated that AMT’s relationship with the original ship designer, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, further deepens the technical capabilities of the partnership.

The partnership is poised to offer exceptional sustainment services, responsive technical support, and forward-looking capability enhancements. This commitment ensures that the Royal Australian Navy will benefit from value, certainty, and excellence in the vessels’ through-life support.

The synergy between BMT, BAE Systems, and AMT is expected to provide an integrated, proven model that reduces platform-related delivery risks, improve performance outcomes, and maintains vessel integrity and certification throughout their lifecycle.

In March 2025, Navantia Australia was awarded the designer support contract, which entails providing comprehensive design and engineering support to all Navantia-designed ships currently in service with the Royal Australian Navy.

This contract represents the first time Navantia Australia has held a contract directly with the Commonwealth of Australia (CoA).

The contract encompasses the Hobart-class Destroyers (DDGs), Canberra-class Landing Helicopter Docks (LHDs), LHD Landing Craft (LLCs), and Supply-class Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment Vessels (AORs).
