• The NVL steel cutting ceremony of the second Type 424 intelligence vessel for the German Navy was held at the Peene-Werft shipyard in Wolgast, Germany, today. The event was attended by representatives of the German Armed Forces as well as representatives of all NVL and Lürssen shipyards involved in the project.
• By utilising all available production capacities of the Lürssen Group and by increasing the involvement of the Peene-Werft shipyard as a production site, NVL is starting construction for the second ship several months earlier than planned.
• The total of three new intelligence vessels will replace the vessels of the OSTE-class currently in operation.

“Just ten months after the start of construction of the first ship, we are now successfully continuing the series with the official steel cutting ceremony for the second of class. By adjusting our resources available and by increasing the involvement of the Peene-Werft shipyard in the construction process, we have been able to start steel work several months ahead of schedule. In doing so, we are responding to the current geopolitical challenges and the corresponding urgent need to accelerate defence procurement projects,” said Tim Wagner, CEO of NVL.

“We were able to adjust successfully by providing a high degree of flexibility, and by establishing a close and trusting collaboration between all stakeholders involved in the project – particularly with regards to our contracting authority, the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw).”

The Type 424 intelligence vessels are approximately 130 metres long and equipped with a state-of-the-art sensor suite. They will serve the German Armed Forces as maritime surveillance and reconnaissance platforms for information gathering. Their design meets the latest military requirements for future-proof naval vessels.
