In the 2nd half of 2005, Empresa de Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Electrónica, S.A. (EID) and the German company Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW) signed a contract for Integrated Communications Systems (ICS) for two submarines and an option for a third unit.

EID will provide the system design and engineering, the external and internal communications equipment including the ICCS (Integrated Communications Control System) and services.

EID also signed with the Portuguese shipyard Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo, S.A. (ENVC) a contract to supply ICS for two Pollution Control OPVs.

In both programmes EID is the communications system integrator.
