Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has signed a new contract with Germany-based ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) for the purchase of two additional Type 218SG submarines.
The company will also provide a logistics package and a crew training arrangement in Germany as part of the new deal.

The two new submarines will join the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) as part of its approach to long-term capability development.
TKMS has specifically designed and developed the 218SG class submarines to meet the RSN’s operational requirements.
The vessels are incorporated with design innovation and advanced maintenance and engineering concepts to optimise training, operation and maintenance costs.
RSN's new submarines will be equipped with significantly enhanced capabilities such as modern combat systems and air-independent propulsion devices.

By GlobalDataThe Singapore MINDEF signed a contract with the company for the acquisition of the first two Type 218SG submarines in December 2013.
These submarines, along with the Archer-class submarines, will replace the Singapore navy’s traditional Challenger-class vessels that were built in the 1960s.
Construction work on the first two Type 218SG submarines began at the Kiel premises of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems following their steel-cutting in 2014. The vessels are expected for delivery from 2021.
All four vessels will serve as a part of the RSN's submarine force renewal programme, which has been designed to meet the navy’s operational requirements.
