The Singapore MINDEF signed a contract with the company for the acquisition of the first two Type 218SG submarines in December 2013.

These submarines, along with the Archer-class submarines, will replace the Singapore navy’s traditional Challenger-class vessels that were built in the 1960s.

Construction work on the first two Type 218SG submarines began at the Kiel premises of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems following their steel-cutting in 2014. The vessels are expected for delivery from 2021.

All four vessels will serve as a part of the RSN's submarine force renewal programme, which has been designed to meet the navy’s operational requirements.
