QinetiQ Target Systems has received a new order from the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) to deliver more than 40 units of Hammerhead unmanned surface vehicle (USV) targets and several payloads.
The latest C$4.7m ($3.86m) order is part of an existing C$35m ($28.75m) framework contract with the Canadian Department of National Defence.

The five-year contract was originally awarded in May last year and includes the supply of surface and aerial target systems.
Hammerhead targets are equipped with a large variety of threat-emulating payloads and allow ship operators to train against piracy threats by simulating fast inshore attack craft.
The targets can be controlled in large swarms in order to adequately replicate a coordinated attack by multiple naval ships.

The current contract brings the total Hammerhead orders across the world to more than 425.
The company was established in December last year following QinetiQ's acquisition of Canada-based firm Meggitt Target Systems for a sum of £57.5m.
