General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) has received a contract modification to support the US Navy’s Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN).
The estimated value of this cost-plus-fixed-fee and cost-plus-incentive-fee award is approximately $5.13bn.

It has been awarded as part of the existing Columbia Integrated Product and Process Development contract for which GDEB is the prime contractor.
The new award will advance the overall procurement and construction process of crucial components/material to support development of next five ships of the class.
The company is currently working on the first two Columbia-class submarines, including The District of Columbia (SSBN 826) and Wisconsin (SSBN 827).
According to the US Department of Defense (DoD) announcement, the amount will also be used to procure missile tube long-lead-time material, missile tube manufacturing as well as for supporting other advance procurement activities.

By GlobalDataIt includes production backup units, programme equipment replacement, logistics/sustainment support for US-UK programmes and advance construction/material procurement for multi-programmes, such as Columbia-class, Virginia-class and Ford-class vessels.
Besides, the award will allow GDEB to continue providing enhancements for the Submarine Industrial Base (SIB) development.
Work will primarily be carried out at GDEB’s facility in Groton, Connecticut, while other locations, including Quonset Point, Rhode Island and Newport News, Virginia, will also support some associated tasks. It is expected to complete October 2030.
GDEB president Kevin Graney said: “This award enhances GDEB’s efforts to maintain Columbia-class production/delivery schedule.
“Advance procurement of long-lead-time materials and component construction is critical to programme and strategic investments in development and expansion of SIB will help stabilise and grow the supply chain, which increases manufacturing capacity, reduces risk and ultimately drives timely delivery of submarines to the Navy.”
Delivery of the lead Columbia-class submarine is expected by 2027.
