German shipbuilding company thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TMS) has delivered the first of four MEKO A-200 frigates, named Al-Aziz, to the Egyptian Navy.
Delivery of the new vessel was marked by a ceremony held in Bremerhaven, Germany, on 14 October.

In the same event, the Egyptian Navy’s chief of staff vice-admiral Ashraf Ibrahim Atwa also named the second MEKO A-200 frigate as Al-Qadeer.
Atwa said: “Germany always supports Egypt with the up-to-date technology needed to enhance our naval capabilities.
“We have a longstanding and successful history of cooperation, as reflected in the highly efficient 209 submarines.
“Our cooperation was not limited to only building new ships but was also extended to cover advanced training for our crews to absorb the new advanced technology.”

By GlobalDataLaunched in April last year, the new vessel Al-Aziz is now set to start its voyage to its home port in Alexandria, Egypt.
The Egyptian Navy’s four MEKO A-200 vessels are being constructed as part of a contract signed in September 2018.
Under this MEKO A-200 construction contract, TMS is responsible for building the first three vessels in Germany, while the fourth frigate is being constructed by an Egyptian company Alexandria Shipyard (ASY).
TMS CEO Oliver Burkhard said: “This record timeline was possible only because the Egyptian Navy and thyssenkrupp Marine Systems have such a long and trustful partnership.
“The strategic programme is based on an open and collaborative dialogue with our customers and we are thankful for their tireless efforts in contributing to the success of this project.”
Earlier in July this year, Naval Group announced the completion of initial sea trials for the Egyptian Navy’s third Gowind-class corvette.
