Fincantieri has delivered the Qatari Emiri Navy’s (QEN) second offshore patrol vessel (OPV) Sheraouh at the Muggiano (La Spezia) shipyard in Italy.
Delivery of the vessel was marked by a ceremony attended by Italian Defence Minister Lorenzo Guerini and Qatar Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Affairs Minister Dr Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah.

The company is under contract to build two OPVs for the QEN under the Qatari Ministry of Defence’s national naval acquisition programme.
The €4bn ($4.06bn) programme also involves construction of four 100m-long corvettes and one landing platform dock (LPD).
In September 2020, Fincantieri launched the first OPV Musherib. It was handed over to the QEN in January this year.
The 63m-long, 9.2m-wide second OPV Sheraouh offers a maximum speed of 30 knots. It can accommodate around 38 crew members aboard.

According to Fincantieri, the ships have been designed in accordance with the rules for naval ships classification (RINAMIL) for the fast patrol vessel.
The QEN’s two OPVs are flexible type of ships that can perform several functions including maritime combat and surveillance.
Furthermore, the propulsion system in the OPVs has four variable pitch propellers placed in line with a diesel propulsion engine.
Out of the four propellers, two are placed near the starboard, while the other two are to the left.
Earlier in April, Fincantieri delivered the second of the four Al Zubarah-class corvettes. The company also started the construction of amphibious vessel LPD in May.
