Bell Textron and Boeing have delivered the first CMV-22B aircraft to the US Navy for fleet operations.

Boeing Tiltrotor Programs vice-president and Bell Boeing team deputy director Shane Openshaw said: “This first fleet delivery marks a new chapter of the V-22 Tiltrotor programme providing enhanced capabilities and increased flexibility to the US Navy as they conduct important operational missions around the globe.”

This aircraft marks the third overall delivery to the US Navy.

In February and May this year, Bell Boeing delivered the first two CMV-22B aircraft at Naval Air Station Patuxent River for developmental testing.

With the capacity to carry 6,000 pounds of cargo, the aircraft will conduct the Carrier Onboard Delivery Mission replacing the C-2A Greyhound.

It combines the vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) qualities of a helicopter with the long-range, fuel efficiency and speed characteristics of a turboprop aircraft.

The navy variant was designed by Bell Boeing. Two additional 60-gallon tanks can cover more than 1,150 nautical miles.

To enhance the navy’s readiness, the CMV-22B can provide roll-on/roll-off delivery of the F135 engine power module.

US Navy Fleet Logistics Multi-Mission Wing Commodore Captain Dewon Chaney said: “The CMV-22 will be a game-changing enabler to the high-end fight supporting the sustainment of combat lethality to the carrier strike group.

“The multi-mission capabilities of the CMV-22, already recognised, will be realised in Naval Aviation’s Air Wing of the future. The arrival of this aircraft is the first of many steps to that becoming reality.”
