Saab has received a contract from the US Navy to provide the Sea Giraffe multi-mode radar (MMR) for the Coast Guard’s offshore patrol cutter.
This order is an option that stems from an existing contract that was initially awarded in 2017.

The latest award consists of multiple line item options for the delivery of additional Sea Giraffe MMR systems.
Under the original contract, Saab was ordered to perform manufacturing, inspection, testing and delivery of the radars for deployment on the US Coast Guard’s Heritage-class offshore patrol cutter.
The company is expected to make deliveries between 2020 and 2021.

The Sea Giraffe MMR radar will also be supplied for integration on the Hershel Wilson Expeditionary Sea Base (ESB-4) class ship, which is operated by the US Military Sealift Command.
In the US, Sea Giraffe is designated AN/SPS-77. The multi-role medium-range 3D surveillance radar system radar is currently being deployed on the US Navy’s Independence-class littoral combat ships (LSC).
Saab received an order in April to supply the AN/SPS-77 radars for installation on the newest LCS vessels USS Kingsville (LCS 36) and USS Pierre (LCS 38).
Designed for naval applications, the AN/SPS-77 radar provides medium-range, simultaneous air and surface surveillance.
Furthermore, the company is developing a new variant of Sea Giraffe MMR radar, known as AN/SPN-50.
The radar will be installed on the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier (CVN) and America (LHA) and Wasp (LHD) class amphibious assault ships to meet the air traffic control needs of the US Naval Air Systems Command.
