Under the £17.5m ($28.4m) contract, the hull of ship will be coated with a super-efficient Sigma 990 paint to help it glide through the water. An underwater spoiler, known as a transom flap, will also be fitted to the stern.
BAE will also revamp the weapons and communications systems and remove all four of the ship’s engines, with two to be restored and the other two to be replaced.
BAE Systems refit project manager Malcolm Fudge said the company would work with the Ministry of Defence to analyse trends as well as systems and equipment on board ahead of each refit to help reduce the length of time the ship needs to spend in dock.
