INS Chennai is a guided missile destroyer with enhanced stealth features and land-attack capabilities, and will serve the Indian Navy along with the Talwar Class destroyer and the ‘new’ Nilgiri (Project 17) Class frigate, according to brahmand.com.
The 163m-long Kolkata Class destroyer can cruise at a speed in excess of 30kt.
The ship will be equipped with the supersonic BrahMos surface-to-surface missile system, which will enable it to engage shore-based and naval surface targets at long ranges against enemy targets.
The destroyer will also incorporate state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, stealth features, an advanced action information system, and a comprehensive auxiliary control system.
INS Chennai is expected to be officially commissioned into naval service in August 2013.
