Russia will purchase Mistral Class amphibious assault ships from France only if they come with their associated technology, according to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Negotiations are underway for the purchase of at least one French-built Mistral Class ship and three more vessels in cooperation with the French naval shipbuilder DCNS.

Putin said the deal was worth considering only if the parallel transfer of technology comes as part of it. This would provide the country’s shipbuilders with a new technological boost for development.

A Mistral Class ship can transport and deploy 16 helicopters, four landing barges and up to 70 armoured vehicles, including 13 battle tanks and 450 personnel.

The Russian Navy will use the Mistral Class assault ships in its Northern and Pacific Fleets.
