The Portuguese Navy has taken delivery of the Trident, one of two German submarines on order, from the German Submarine Consortium (GSC) at the Lisbon Naval Base.

In 2004, Portugal signed a contract with the GSC for two U-214 submarines for €770m ($1bn), an amount that has raised due to delays.

The 65m-long U-214 submarine with a 1,700tn displacement capacity is the first submarine built by GSC.

The second submarine is scheduled for delivery in the first quarter of 2011.

The consortium includes naval shipbuilders Ferrostaal and HDW.
