The Russian Navy’s newest Borey Class strategic nuclear-powered submarine, the Yury Dolgoruky, has successfully completed sea trials in the White Sea.

The Sevmash shipyard spokesman said all systems of the submarine performed well, and the problems revealed during previous tests have been resolved.

The 170m-long Yury Dolgoruky, with a hull diameter of 13m and a depth of 450m, is capable of carrying 16 ballistic missiles, torpedoes and a crew of 107 at a speed of 29kt.

The construction cost of the submarine totals $713m, including $280m for research and development, according to RIA Novosti.

The submarine’s deployment into service could be delayed due to a series of failures in the development of the ill-fated Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM).

Russia has plans to build eight Borey Class submarines by 2015, which are expected to form the core of its modern strategic submarine fleet.
