The Indian Navy’s second fleet tanker, INS Shakti, was launched at a shipyard in Genoa, Italy.

The €300m ($417.6m) contract, which was signed in April 2008, includes two vessels to be built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, according to Zee News.

INS Shakti is being built using modern shipbuilding methods and concepts including advanced outfitting, and is double-hulled for safety against accidental oil spillages.

The vessel will undergo sea trials in December 2010 and is expected to be delivered and commissioned in India in the middle of 2011.

INS Deepak, the first of the two fleet tankers, is at an advanced stage of trials and is scheduled for delivery at the end of 2010.
