The 361ft-long, 6,087t Los Angeles Class submarine was commissioned on 17 December 1977.
Memphis had returned from a two-month deployment overseas, supporting missions in the European Command area of responsibility.
The submarine was capable of accommodating a crew of 13 officers and cruising at a speed of 32kt, and had travelled more than 1.4 million miles in service.
The submarine will return to Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY), New England, US where it will be dismantled and officially decommissioned.
